The competition design explicitly articulates the spatial relations between the older and newer parts of the village, the large open space of the Zuidelijke Es and the surrounding landscape in order to establish the specific spatial unity of Zuidlaren.

The design explores the concept for the development of the existing man-made landscape, strip-allotment and ribbon development, both as a spatial and strategic means. Intensive exploration of the concept combines the latently present urban quality of the Dutch landscape with the spatial image of a village.

The design offers a very flexible concept for the development of the terrain. Facts and figures can easily be changed in time without affecting the intended spatial quality. Besides it offers the possibility of phased realisation. The spatial quality will manifest itself from start.
